Interview with Ar Iskandar Idris: Viewing Design As A Collaborative Journey

It isn’t often that we get to interview a renown architect, who has appeared in Archdaily and D+A. We are really thrilled and excited with to sit down and have a heart to heart session with Architect Iskandar Idris from Super Assembly.

What inspired you to become an interior designer/architect, and what continues to inspire you in your work today?

The allure of design, for me, has always been its potential for transformation. It's a domain where we can mould environments, enrich lives, and wield a tangible impact through conscientious design - a prospect that has always propelled me. The endless scope for creativity within this sphere continues to fuel my inspiration. Each project presents itself as a distinct canvas, a fresh opportunity to devise innovative solutions that keep the flame of my passion ignited.

How do you approach the design process, from ideation to execution, and what steps do you take to ensure your designs meet the unique needs of each client?

Our design process is anchored in the ethos of our studio - a commitment to open-ended exploration and a firm belief in the power of client dialogue. We view design as a collaborative journey, working in tandem with our clients to comprehend their unique needs and aspirations. By rejecting the constraints of stylistic templates, we ensure that every design we craft is a bespoke reflection of the client's values and the project's specific context. This approach fosters the creation of spaces that are not only enduring but also deeply resonant.

What is your philosophy when it comes to designing interior spaces, and how do you balance aesthetic appeal with practical functionality?

Our design philosophy is rooted in the creation of spaces that surpass the limitations of stylistic trends and instead embrace the timeless values of community, culture, and nature. We hold the conviction that aesthetics and functionality are not mutually exclusive but can coalesce seamlessly when each project is approached with a spirit of open exploration. Through an interactive, co-creation process with our clients, we manage to strike a harmonious balance between visual allure and practical utility, culminating in spaces that are as captivating as they are functional.

How do you stay up-to-date with the latest design trends and techniques, and how do you incorporate these into your work while maintaining your own unique style?

Staying at the forefront of this ever-evolving discipline is paramount. Through consistent attendance at architecture shows, design seminars, exhibitions, and workshops, I keep my finger on the pulse of the latest trends and techniques. However, maintaining a distinctive design style is equally important. I achieve this balance by judiciously integrating trends that resonate with my design philosophy, and more crucially, align with the client's vision.

What is your favourite project that you've worked on, and what made it so special to you?

The Blinker House project holds an unrivalled place in my portfolio. What set it apart was the extraordinary synergy between our studio and the clients. Right from the inception, there was a profound trust and shared commitment that established the foundation for collaboration. The clients placed their project in our hands, giving us the liberty to exercise our creative prowess in decision-making. This level of trust catalysed our exploration of a plethora of design intricacies and avant-garde approaches, thus breathing life into the design brief in a novel and thrilling manner. Blinker House stands as a testament to the power of a robust partnership between the design team and the clients, culminating in a project that genuinely embodied our studio's ethos and design philosophy.

How do you collaborate with other professionals, such as consultants or contractors, to ensure a seamless design and construction process?

The linchpin of any successful project is collaboration. My work is deeply intertwined with a network of trusted professionals, encompassing architects, engineers, and contractors. Clear, transparent communication, alignment on project objectives, and regular team meetings form the basis of a coordinated, seamless execution from conception to fruition.

Does your work allow you to practice sustainability, and if so, how do you incorporate sustainability and eco-friendliness into your designs, and why is this important to you and/or your firm?

Sustainability is not just a preference, but a fundamental tenet for both myself and my firm. We consistently prioritize the use of eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient designs, and sustainable construction practices. Our unwavering commitment to sustainability mirrors our responsibility towards the environment and future generations, aligning seamlessly with our conviction that good design should preserve, not deplete.

How do you handle challenges that arise during the design process, such as unexpected setbacks or client requests that may conflict with your vision?

Challenges, while inherent to the design process, are met with agility and a problem-solving spirit. I uphold transparent and candid communication with clients, striving to find mutually agreeable solutions that respect their objectives and my design philosophy. It's crucial to remember that challenges often pave the way for innovative and distinctive design solutions.

What advice would you give to aspiring interior designers/architects, and how can they develop their own unique style and approach to the field?

To those embarking on their design journey, my counsel is to perpetually seek learning and exploration. Seize every chance to acquire practical experience, and don't shy away from taking risks and defying conventions. Your unique style will surface through experimentation and a thorough comprehension of your personal design sensibilities. Trust your instincts and remain faithful to your vision.

What do you hope to achieve in your career as an interior designer/architect, and what are some of the long-term goals you have for your work?

My long-term aspiration is to keep breaking new ground in design and sustainability. I aim to spearhead projects that not only inspire peers in the industry but also make a positive impact on the environment and society. My ambition is to leave an indelible legacy of innovative, sustainable design that enriches countless lives.
